What is an MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a diagnostic procedure that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed cross sectional images of the selected area of the body.
MRI is completely painless and without side effects. No radiation is used.

How do I prepare for my exam?
You should plan to arrive 15 minutes before your table time. You may eat and continue to take any medication prescribed by your physician. However, it is helpful not to eat or drink for approximately 4 hours prior to abdomen or pelvis exams. Wear comfortable clothing with no metal zippers or buttons. If this is not possible you will be provided with a gown.

What should I expect during the exam?
The technologist will position you on the padded table and move you into the center of the magnet. You will lie there for the duration of the exam. During this time, you will hear a distinct knocking sound at certain intervals. These sounds are normal. The images are being taken and you should stay very still. You and the technologist will keep in contact via intercom.

How long will the procedure take?
The total time in the MRI scanner will be between 30 to 60 minutes depending on the requested exam.

Can I have family or friends accompany me during my exam?
You may bring a relative or friend along to sit with you during the exam. They will be screened by the technologist to ensure their safety prior to entering the MRI room.

Can everyone have a MRI?
Not all patients are MR compatible. Please let us know if you have had any metallic implants including but not limited to: Cardiac Pacemaker, Cerebral Aneurysm Clip, Cochlear Implants and any other stimulators or implants. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us. We may need additional information before performing the exam.

I am claustrophobic. What can I do?
Let your doctor know that you are claustrophobic. Your doctor will prescribe medication to take prior to your exam. You will need someone to drive you to and from our facility.

How will I learn about my results?
Your MRI images will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist. A written report will be sent to your physician who will then review the results with you.
